About this course

Our EAP course provides you with the academic study skills and English language skills you need for further study at tertiary level.

What you will learn

You will learn a range of academic study skills, including:

Research techniques:

  • Skimming for relevant information
  • Avoiding plagiarism

Collaboration skills:

  • Working effectively in a team
  • Delegating duties amongst team members

Writing techniques:

  • Sentence and paragraph structures
  • Academic writing conventions
  • Advanced punctuation

Listening techniques:

  • How to understand the general idea of a conversation/presentation, without understanding every word

Speaking techniques:

  • Public speaking: How to prepare and deliver effective presentation
  • How to organise your ideas clearly and concisely

Reading techniques:

  • How to understand an article quickly, without reading every word
  • How to find specific details within a text

We will assign short daily homework tasks for you.

Assessments

We will assign you assessments spanning multiple weeks, for example:

  • Research essay (Part 1 of 2)
  • Oral presentation based on research essay (Part 2 of 2)

Feedback

Every 10 weeks, your teacher will give you 1-to-1 feedback about your study progress.

Excursions & School events

Your teacher will take you on excursions to help prepare you for academic life. Examples include visiting a library to borrow books and use the catalog system; Attending higher education fairs to learn about prospective courses; and making cold calls to departments and businesses to build research skills.
